Leistung

One of the great pleasures of German is watching it build a cathedral of meaning from a single stone. Take the word Leistung. At its heart is an old verb meaning to follow a track or a furrow, a sense our own word last—as in the shoemaker’s last—still faintly recalls. In German, it blossomed into the idea of an accomplishment, a performance, or an output. From this one brick, German constructs whole institutions. It can describe the quiet transaction of a Dienstleistung, or service, where one person’s effort is offered to another. But weld a few more words on, and you get the vast, impersonal engine of the Gesamtwirtschaftsleistung, the entire economic output of a nation. This is German’s particular genius. Where English might reach for a Latin word like "economy" or "sector", German simply keeps building with the same native stones. It sees the individual athlete’s Höchstleistung (peak performance) and the nation's economic might as different scales of the same fundamental thing: a measurable, traceable accomplishment. It is a worldview captured in a single word-family.
