Sicher

The English word secure comes to us from Latin, where se- meant "without" and cura meant "care". To be secure was to be without care, free from worry. The German sicher shares this root, but it seems to have kept its hands dirty. It feels less like a state of tranquil freedom and more like the result of hard work: the act of making something safe, of fastening it down. This is the spirit of German compounding. Where an English speaker might describe a "safety mindset" or "legal certainty," German builds the idea right into the word itself: Sicherheitsdenken (security-thinking), Rechtssicherheit (law-safety). This is not so alien. Consider the humble English fuse box. That little switch that trips to prevent a power surge? A German calls that a Sicherung. It is the physical act of securing made into a noun. This instinct to build, to add another plank of meaning, allows for breathtaking precision. A coach can lament his team’s failure at Gegenangriffssicherung, a single word for the entire strategy of preventing a counter-attack. It is a word built like a fortress, piece by piece, to hold a very specific meaning safe.
