Bild

To speak of a Bild is to speak of a picture, an image. The word itself feels close to the English "build," and though they are not direct cousins, the instinct is a good one. Both concern the act of making something take shape. An English speaker might talk of "building a case" or "building a world." German takes this same constructive impulse and applies it directly to the act of seeing and knowing. A Weltbild is a "world-picture," a worldview not just held but constructed, piece by piece. A Feindbild is an "enemy-picture," the deliberate shaping of a foe in the public mind. This is more than a simple compound like "picture frame." It's conceptual architecture. The mind itself can be furnished with such pictures: Einbildungskraft is the power (Kraft) to form images inside (ein-) oneself—the imagination. And to be educated is, in a sense, to be formed. The German for education is Bildung. A person is given an image, a shape, a form. To receive an Ausbildung, or training, is to be "built out" into a specific professional shape, ready for the world. German doesn't just name these ideas; it shows you how they are assembled.
