Sicht

The English word "sight" and the German "Sicht" are brothers, born from an ancient root meaning "to see." Where English often stops with the simple noun, however, German treats "Sicht" as a kind of living clay, to be pinched, pulled, and built upon. Take "Weitsicht," for instance. It is literally "wide-sight," a beautiful, almost poetic way to describe foresight or vision. English speakers have a similar instinct—think of a "lookout" post—but we often reach for a Latin import like "perspective." German, feeling no such need, simply adds another piece: a "Sichtweise" is a "way of seeing," your particular vantage point. This building impulse can create wonderfully precise, if formidable, constructions. The "Aufsichtsrat" is a supervisory board, a council whose job is literally "on-sight." They watch over the proceedings. This is the German genius at work: not inventing new words from foreign soil, but revealing new meanings by combining what is already there, turning a simple sense like sight into a tool for understanding everything from a business meeting to a person's character.
