Gewinn

To speak of "Gewinn" is to speak of what one gains. The root resembles the English "win", and for good reason: they are cousins, both descended from an ancient word for striving, pasturing, or winning something through effort. From this simple idea of a "win", German builds a vast and often morally complicated world. A "Gewinner" is a simple winner, the hero of a story. But the language keeps building. Add the pursuit of something, "-streben", and you get "Gewinnstreben", the pursuit of profit, a concept with a colder, more corporate feel. Add "-sucht", the word for addiction or mania, and "Gewinnsucht" becomes an insatiable greed. The English speaker's mind, when it needs to describe this darker territory, often reaches for a Latin import like "avarice". The German mind, by contrast, simply bolts on another piece of its own native machinery, turning a win into a sickness. You can watch the same logic unfold in a word like "Übergewinnsteuer", a tax on excess profits. It is a tax, a "Steuer", on profits, "Gewinne", that have gone over, "über". Each part is plain, but together they form a concept for which English needed the much more poetic "windfall tax".
